Welcome to the Temiskaming Thunder, a basketball club supporting youth in Temiskaming Shores and the surrounding areas. Founded in February 2023 by Morgan Johanson, Lorna Desmarais, and Jonathan Maga, our not-for-profit basketball club is driven by a passionate volunteer Board of Directors dedicated to nurturing young talent and fostering a love for the sport. With programs catering to co-ed children ages 5-19, there's something for everyone at Temiskaming Thunder.
Our programs, supported by the generous donations of local businesses (see our sponsors), that have helped provide a platform for young athletes to develop their skills, and to grow in a supportive environment. Whether your child is just starting or looking to compete at a higher level, we have a program designed to meet their needs.
Our Programs; Basketball in Northern Ontario
Youth League: Building the Fundamentals
Our Youth League is the perfect starting point for young athletes in grades 1-8. Focusing on fundamental development, this program introduces children to the basics of basketball in a fun, inclusive setting. Through engaging training sessions and friendly competitions, participants will improve their skills and foster a lifelong love for the sport. We will be hosting Youth League programming twice a year: once in the fall in Englehart at EHS and again in the spring in New Liskeard at TDSS. These 1-hour sessions take place once a week over a 6-8 week period and are open to both girls and boys in grades 1-8.

Competitive Travel Club Teams: Taking it to the Next Level
For those looking to challenge themselves, our Competitive Rep/Club Teams offer a structured environment focused on skill enhancement, teamwork, and tactical understanding. Boys and girls ages 10-19 (varying based on interest each year) can try out for these teams, which participate in competitive leagues and tournaments across the province, including the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships. Advanced coaching and regular practice sessions ensure our athletes are always at the top of their game. Practices and tryouts are hosted in both Englehart and New Liskeard.
We travel to compete in the North from Kirkland Lake, Timmins, North Bay, and Sudbury to down South in Ottawa, Newmarket, and Toronto, competing against teams across the province. Forming teams with players from but not limited to schools at EHS, ESCSM, and TDSS to form teams that compete at the next level. Each year, we plan to host 3-4 rep travel teams in our community based on interest.

Training Camps: Intensive Skill Development
Our specialized training camps provide intensive skill development opportunities, focusing on key areas like shooting, ball handling, defense, and overall game strategy. Led by experienced coaches and trainers, these camps are designed to boost confidence and help athletes reach their full potential.

Bridging Communities: A Dual-Location Approach
Understanding the unique challenges of Northern Ontario, we operate out of two key communities: Englehart and New Liskeard. By splitting our practices and youth leagues between TDSS, EHS, and ESCSM, we reduce travel times and make participation more accessible for families in our communities.
Join the Temiskaming Thunder Family
We invite families and students from New Liskeard, Englehart, and the Temiskaming Shores surrounding areas to become part of the Temiskaming Thunder family. Our programs are designed to provide an equal opportunity for all athletes to learn, excel, and enjoy the game of basketball. Come and see why Temiskaming Thunder is the perfect place for your child to grow both on and off the court.
